Here’s a look at the number of thru-hikers who summited the highest peak in the Continental United States and why some decided to skip it. Not an alternate, but instead the official destination of a traditional southbound JMT thru-hike, Mount Whitney is not an objective that all JMT hikers find themselves atop. Alternates are listed in geographical order from north to south. I ask about these alternates to get an idea of what the most common JMT thru-hike looks like. The John Muir Trail is well-defined, but there are several alternates (sometimes also known as “shortcuts”) hikers can take either in place of or in addition to the official JMT. If no color/label has been appended, I used all data collected.
